JAMB Syllabus for Use of English 2024/2025

JAMB syllabus for the use of English 2023/2024 has been uploaded. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board made this move to help students prepare for their forthcoming (UTME).

Objectives of JAMB Syllabus for the Use of English

The JAMB syllabus for the Use of English aims to prepare the candidates for the Board’s examination and to test candidates’ understanding, knowledge, and acquisition of the following areas of the subject:

  • To enable the student to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English.
  •   And use the English Language for learning at the tertiary level.

Topics Under JAMB Use of English Syllabus

The topics included in the JAMB syllabus for the Use of English are divided into three sections. 

Comprehension|Summary

  • Description
  • Narration
  • Exposition
  • Argumentation/persuasion
  • Questions on the passages will test the following:
    • Comprehension of the whole or part of each passage
    • Comprehension of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, figures of speech, and idioms as used in the passages
    • Coherence and logical reasoning (deductions, inferences, etc.)
    • The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli
    • Synthesis of ideas from the passages.
  • Note: Synthesis of ideas means combining distinct or separate pieces of information to form a complete whole.

Objectives

Candidates should be able to:

  • Identify main points/topic sentences in passages.
  • Determine implied meaning.
  • Determine the grammatical functions of phrases, clauses, words, and figurative/idiomatic expressions.
  • Deduce or infer the writer’s intentions, including mood, attitude to the subject matter, and opinion.

Lexis and Structure

  • Synonyms
  • Antonyms
  • Homonyms
  • Clauses and sentence patterns
  •  Word classes and their functions
  •  Mood, number, agreement/concord, tense, aspect, degree (positive, comparative, and superlative), and question tags
  •  Punctuation and spelling
  •  They are to be tested in ordinary, figurative, and idiomatic usage.

Note: Idioms to be tested shall be formal and expressed in standard British English.

Objectives

Also, Candidates should be able to:

  • Determine words and expressions in their ordinary, figurative, and idiomatic contexts.
  •  Determine similar and opposite meanings of words.
  •  Distinguish between correct and incorrect punctuation and spelling.
  •  Determine various grammatical patterns in use.
  •  Interpret information conveyed in sentences.

Oral Forms

  • Vowels (monophthongs and diphthongs.
  •  Consonants (including clusters).
  •  Rhymes (including homophones).
  •  Word stress (monosyllabic and polysyllabic).
  •  Intonation (words emphatic stress).

Note: Emphatic stress involves the placement of normal stress on words in an utterance for emphasis.

Objectives

So, participants should be able to:

  • Distinguish between vowel types.
  • Make distinctions between consonant types.
  • Determine correct accentuation in individual words and connected speech.
